The Renaissance Theatre Company (RTC) is making a grand return to musicals, bringing to life the timeless musical comedy, "Anything Goes.” This beloved show has journeyed through various titles over the years, including “Crazy Week” and “Hard To Get,” before settling on “Anything Goes.” Audiences have been charmed and humming along to its tunes from the moment it debuted in 1934, thanks to the legendary Cole Porter's captivating music and lyrics. The show features enduring pop and jazz standards such as "Anything Goes,” "All Through The Night,” “De-Lovely," and "I Get A Kick Out of You,” which continue to resonate with listeners.

"Anything Goes" has enjoyed numerous revivals both in the United States and Britain and has even inspired three film adaptations. The original book by Guy Bolton and P.G. Wodehouse was later refined by Howard Lindsay and Russel Crouse, who molded it into the version that audiences witness today.

Jeremy Golden, RTC's Artistic Director, lauds the show's "infallible tunes." He emphasizes their universal appeal, stating, “They are catchy and familiar, and people will be surprised that they know and can sing along to so many of the show’s songs.” This production represents RTC's first musical since 2018 and is set to be their most ambitious dance extravaganza to date. The spacious stage at Aliso Niguel High School has allowed for the construction of a two-story set, giving the cast ample space to showcase their remarkable talents. “Anything Goes” is dancing to the extreme!” Jeremy exclaims with enthusiasm.

The musical's vibrant score will be brought to life by a live six-piece orchestra, featuring drums, piano, brass, and woodwinds. Jeremy underscores the importance of live musicians, stating, “Having live musicians is very important to us because it’s so much more engaging for the actors and audience alike. Plus, it really fills out a Cole Porter score.” This dedication to musical authenticity enhances the overall experience for both the performers and the audience.

Jeremy and his wife, Jennifer, who serves as Managing Director, are dedicated to making RTC a multi-generational family endeavor. Their shared passion for theatre is evident, as they met performing in a show together, reconnected years later, and have since made theatre their life's work. “This is a passion for us. It’s what we want our life’s work to be. And it’s awesome to be able to do it together,” Jeremy shares, highlighting their deep commitment to the art form.

The plot of “Anything Goes” revolves around the comical escapades aboard the S.S. American. Stowaway Billy Crocker is determined to win the heart of heiress Hope Harcourt, who is engaged to Lord Evelyn Oakleigh. With the help of nightclub singer Reno Sweeney and public enemy Moonface Martin, Billy navigates a series of mistaken identities, romantic entanglements, and hilarious situations, all set to Porter's unforgettable melodies.

This production holds special significance for Jeremy and Jennifer, who are also performing as Moonface Martin and Irma, respectively. “Being part of the cast has allowed us to embrace and create an even greater bond with the community,” Jeremy notes, reflecting on the personal connection they share with the show and the audience.

As a theatre teacher at Aliso Niguel High School, Jeremy involves his current and former students in the production, with alumni taking on pivotal roles such as Lighting and Sound Designers and Stage Managers. RTC’s mission is to create a multi-level, multi-generational theatre experience, ensuring the torch of theatrical passion is passed to the next generation of theatre enthusiasts.

While delighted to perform in such a large venue, Jeremy acknowledges the logistical challenges, stating, “…it’s still not our own space and a lot of juggling takes place. Our Board of Directors is actively looking for a space that Renaissance Theatre Company can call home.” Despite these hurdles, RTC remains steadfast in its commitment to producing classic works that are both family-friendly and artistically enriching. Three more classic productions are already scheduled for the upcoming season, promising a vibrant future for the company.

Whether you are a seasoned theatregoer or new to the stage, Jeremy assures, “…this is just fun! The audience is going to have a good time!” The Renaissance Theatre Company is dedicated to creating dramatic art that is both artistically bold and morally responsible, all while fostering a strong sense of community. Join them for "Anything Goes" where toe-tapping tunes abound and everything is ‘De-Lovely’.
