Is there a story behind Camino Real Playhouse's name?

When founded in December, 1989, we had no 'home'. We used a generic name, South Orange County Community Theatre. San Juan Capistrano offered the use of a building on the street El Camino Real. We are happy to be celebrating our 32 season.

What kind of productions and programming could we expect from your organization?

Mainstage comedy and drama.
Musicals.
Annual Playwriting Festival (ShowOff!) Stage II featuring cutting edge drama and new works.
Monthly Professional Standup Comedy.
Classes.
Student performances.
Outside performers and lecturers.

What's your origin story?

We were approved for our non-profit status in December, 1989. Our founder, BJ Scott, earned her BA in Theatre at UCLA and Camino Real Playhouse is the third theatre group she has founded. Co-founder Tom Scott has degrees in Math and Physics with a hobby interest in theatre as a child.

How is your Camino Real Playhouse different today?

We've grown significantly both in patrons and in the talent running the operations of our company.

Outside of your main productions, do you offer other programs for the community?

We are an active, supporting members of the Chamber, Historical Society, Fiesta Association and others. We provide gift certificates to all local non-profits. We regularly loan set pieces, props and costumes to other theatre groups.

What surprises you the most about producing theatre in your community?

The strong community support for the future of Performing Arts in San Juan Capistrano.

What are your short and long term goals?

Very short term -- survive Covid 19! Rebound quickly with a full season as soon as possible. Long term, there is a possibility for expansion.

How would people get more involved in your organization?

We have an active volunteer team covering all aspects of our operations. Our website, CaminoRealPlayhouse.org, has a spot to 'Get Involved' as a patron, volunteer, donor, actor, playwright and many other options.
