Michelle Calhoun

Theatre Artist

What are you currently working on? I am in between acting projects having just returned from a gig in Finland. I always have something brewing, though, including prepping for an original show. I also enjoy taking classes when I can.
What’s been inspiring you recently? I am inspired by resilience and beauty. This can mean a lot of different things from a flower poking its head through a crack in a well-worn sidewalk or a person surviving a tragic event with a sense of humor.
Tell us a story from your childhood that illuminates who you are as an artist? My dad was in several plays when I was younger. I have many memories of hanging out at theaters watching the actors and the crew work. One of my favorite memories was of a stately, older actor before the rehearsal doing his vocal warm ups. I think it just struck me how much work and preparation goes into a performance that is never seen by the audience. It also impressed upon me that as actors, we need to prep in a way that will support our performance(s).
Who are or were your theatrical heroes? My theatrical heroes are those who are dedicated, hard-working and vulnerable. I also appreciate those who are kind, supportive of others and generous with their knowledge, skills and/or performance. Theater is a community.
What kind of theatre excites you? Any theater that is being done! I love theater that makes me feel and think, especially when it is courageous and truthful. New takes on classic theater can be fun too! I love Shakespeare!
What’s the craziest thing you have ever needed to do for theatre? Considering one of my first jobs was as a character at Disneyland, I don't know that anything was as crazy as wearing a 30 pound suit in the heat and having people hug me and take pictures with me. My character autograph is in thousands of people's books! I have, however, had my clothes torn off onstage (comedically), played characters that died and were dragged around the stage, and participated in a bloody onstage brawl.
Outside of a theatre, what’s your favorite hot spot in Orange County? If I tell you, everyone will start going there! Ha ha.

I am really motivated by food, so my "hot spots" tend to be restaurants. I am really enjoying all of the themed coffee and tea bars that are popping up all over Orange County.
What surprises you the most about your role in the theatre community? Theater by its nature is ever-changing and adaptable. Especially since the pandemic, we are now able to create performances in so many different ways. We have to be open to that. As a result, I don't really find myself surprised because I know I can take on many roles. From onstage to behind the scenes, there is always a place for me--even if I have to create it myself.
What advice do you have for theatre artists just starting out in Orange County? Audition, Audition, Audition! Even if you don't get the part, you never know if the person casting will see you and think you're right for something else in the future. Also, be kind, be prepared and work hard. Everything is a process and can lead to growth.

Time in Greater Orange County I lived in Orange County from 1989 to 2006. I moved away for several years, but my mom and my friends still lived in the OC so I would always come visit. I've returned to Southern CA, but am temporarily living in the San Gabriel Valley area.
Neighborhood I lived in Fullerton and Brea.
Hometown I was born in Chicago, but moved to the San Gabriel Valley area when I was 5. I moved to Orange County during High School.
